1941 marked a major turning point in the war. On June 22, Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Germany’s initial victories were very successful and the nature of the war shifted dramatically. From the outset, the mass extermination of Jews began in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine.
On December 7, Japanese aircraft attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor in the Pacific. President Roosevelt declared war on imperialist and militarist Japan. Four days later, Germany and Italy, Japan’s allies, declared war on the United States.
The geographical spread of the conflict took place in successive stages throughout Europe, Asia, and North Africa, as well as in the air and at sea. However, with the entry of the United States into the war alongside England and the Soviet Union at the end of 1941, the conflict went global. The war intensified.
